چکیده

The distribution of Fucus serratus has a sharp boundary In northern S p a n F serratus dominates the m ~ d ~ n t e r t ~ d a l l e g ~ o n west of Novellana, Asturias but is absent further east In a short t r ans~ t~on zone F serratus 1s abundant within patches The causes underlying this pattern were investlgated by exper~rnental transplants of F serratus to locations In the transit~on zone and ou t s~de its normal range Plants moved outslde the normal range had slmllar growth and reproductive rates to those transplanted to the transition zone and ivith~n the zone of abundance F serratus recruited at s ~ t e s outside the normal boundary apparently from transplanted thalli Temperature affected the growth rate of embryos of F serratus in laboratory exper~rnents Though high summer temperatures may be responsible for the lack of F serratus in the inner part of the Bay of Blscay temperature alone cannot explain the observed l lm~t of distribution Other tactors such as l~mited dispersal ablllty and Interspecific compet~tion w ~ t h other macroalgae might also be important In settlng the boundary for F serratus in northern Spain

A model for range expansion of coastal algal species with different dispersal strategies: the case of Fucus serratus in northern Spain

A model was used to investigate the nature of the distributional boundary of the brown alga Fucus serratus in northern Spain. The model explored the colonisation of a shore by invaders with contrasting dispersal modes: an exponentially bounded mode, as an example of short-range dispersal; an extreme, long-range dispersal mode; and a mixed mode with variable proportions of shortand long-distance...

Thermal stress resistance of the brown alga Fucus serratus along the North-Atlantic coast: acclimatization potential to climate change.

Seaweed-dominated communities are predicted to disappear south of 45° latitude on North-Atlantic rocky shores by 2200 because of climate change. The extent of predicted habitat loss, however, could be mitigated if the seaweeds' physiology is sufficiently plastic to rapidly acclimatize to the warmer temperatures. The main objectives of this study were to identify whether the thermal tolerance of...

Photosynthesis of Intertidal Brown Algae During and After Periods of Emersion: A Renewed Search for Physiological Causes of Zonation

CO2-exchange of emersed plants and 0,-exchange of submersed plants were measured in 5 species of brown algae from different tidal heights on shores in Ireland and Helgoland (southern North Sea). The photosynthesis of emersed fucoids and Laminaria digitata increased as up to 25 % of tissue water was lost, but then declined with further desiccation. The relationship between decrease in photosynth...

Interaction between a fucoid canopy and limpet grazing in structuring a low shore intertidal community

The relative roles of a macroalgal canopy, Fucus serratus L., and a grazer, Patella vulgata L., in structuring a low shore community of a sheltered, rocky intertidal site were examined using a factorial experimental design. Canopy removal and grazer exclusion treatments were used to determine the effects of both factors on the understorey community. Re-establishment of the canopy was studied in...

Interactions between canopy forming algae in the eulittoral zone of sheltered rocky shores on the Isle of Man

The distribution and abundance of Ascophyllum nodosum, Fucus serratus and F. vesiculosus were described at four sheltered, rocky shores in the south of the Isle of Man. Canopy removal experiments were performed at mid tide level of one sheltered, canopy dominated shore to investigate the interactions between the dominant canopy alga, Ascophyllum nodosum and the competitively inferior canopy spe...
